Precious Eggnog...

I just heard the worst ad on the radio for Jenny Craig. They started off by saying that the average weight gain over the holidays is 7 to 10 pounds. Nothing like reminding us what pigs we're going to be in a few short weeks! I'm also going to buy a membership at the gym next week, and did you know that this is the cheapest time to get a gym pass? I thought they would have some good deals in January, but I have been informed by my friend who works at the gym that they boost their prices in January--that is probably when they make the most money during the year with all the New Years resolutions! My mom and dad sent me an email (well, they each sent me the same email separately), and it was so refreshing...basically it said, enjoy the holidays; eat the good food and don't feel guilty about it--it only comes around once a year. My favourite part said that you should drink lots of eggnog, and don't go for the "light" stuff either. I've been drinking eggnog since it came onto the shelves about 2 weeks ago--at this time of year, I can't get enough of it! Right now, I have the light stuff in my fridge (shudder!) but maybe next time I'm in the grocery store, I'll be adventurous and buy the regular stuff. I've also been known to buy soynog. It's actually really good, if you like soy milk--I was pleasantly surprised. But I haven't seen it at Extra Foods yet this year (sigh). When I was a kid, I used to make homemade eggnog with a recipe in a Betty Crocker Cookbook that was my Dad's when he was a kid. Basically, you put in a raw egg, vanilla, milk, and nutmeg. It is sooooo good. That's probably the best kind of eggnog you can get. Don't be turned off by the raw egg! If you need more protein in your diet, then this is the holiday drink for you! I don't have the recipe with me right now, but maybe I'll see if I can get it from my Mom so I can post it. Have you ever tried coffeenog? Just add eggnog to your coffee instead of cream and sugar. Tanneal has also introduced me to eggnog and coke. This is also an interesting combination. I was very sceptical, but it was great! Does anyone else have a cool recipe that uses eggnog? As you can tell I'm a little obsessed with my nogs...

Ok, for anyone who cares, here is the recipe for homemade eggnog...
-1 egg well beaten
-2 tbsp sugar
-pinch of salt
Beat these together with a hand mixer of some sort--you could probably even do it in a blender.
Then beat in:
-1 cup cold milk
-1/4 tsp vanilla
-1 cup cracked ice (optional)
Pour into a glass and sprinkle lightly with nugmeg.
The recipe says that it serves 2, but I always just drank the whole thing myself. Hee!

I love eggnog! I just had some tonight and I tried eggnog in my coffee just this week after seeing Grace do it. It is now my new favorite coffee drink, but I think I perfer not knowing what my nog contains. MAN IF IT WASN'T 12 AT NIGHT i WOULD MAKE MYSELF A CUP RIGHT NOW....

Joy, there's so much artificial stuff in store-bought eggnog. I just looked at the ingredients in mine, and it said stuff like artificial flavour and guar gum. Why would you need artificial flavour? What exactly is guar gum? Also, I wonder what modified mild ingredients are. Granted, it does taste good, but homemade is better!

One more reason I love you... You are a girl after my own heart.
Welcome Christmas, Christmas cheer!
Nothing says christmas cheer like singing loud for all to hear... with a glass of egg nog in one hand and silver bells in the other!

Hmmm...if only I could find some silver bells...

I have to say nothing goes better with eggnog then a weiner stick. now enough said.

Joy, I would have to agree. Weiner sticks are delightful this time of year. Eggnog, shortbread and a weiner stick--a wholesome meal.
Kelly said…
Joy, why not try making the homemade eggnog and using the weiner stick to stir it?

I'm picturing the weiner stick in the nog and it doesn't look good. I can sooooo take that comment really really wrong, if you know what I mean. LOL

You wanna know my absolute favorite thing... weiner sticks in sprite with a glass of room temp mulled alcohol free "spirits"...
mmm dee-lish!

I think Canada Dry would go best with weiner sticks--it IS the champagne of ginger ales, you know. Who wrote this, and who's Rick?!

Rick is tanneal's husband, it says right there on the comment above.

Tanneal's husband's name is John, as you can see in the post about eggnog and sprite! Ok, this is getting out of hand, time for a new post!
